Pregnancy is no longer something to be hidden, but a cause for celebration. Specialist women’s magazines and designer fashion shops have arrived, focussing on the needs of the fashionable woman, enabling long pregnancy to be an opportunity to wear the bold and vivid colours that are everywhere. Celebrity mothers to be are attempting to outdo each other with their stylish and elegant designer maternity wear. However, despite the ongoing trend to be fashionably pregnant with panache, key maternity wear designers are still few and far between. Many celebrities commission their favourite designer to make an item of maternity wear especially for them. Those fabulous maternity evening gowns seen on the red carpet at big award ceremonies are generally not available to the pregnant public. However, those designers who do get it right have proved popular with the fashionistas and movie stars.
Seraphine is a fashion house specialising in trendy designer clothes for the beautiful crowd. Halle Berry was seen wearing a Maternity Crochet Tunic Top only a couple of days before the birth of her daughter, and A-lister Angelina Jolie opted for a pair of straight leg trousers during her recent pregnancy. Jessica Alba chose a Long Cocktail Dress as well as Reversible Band Bikini, and other stars to go for Seraphine maternity wear have included Sara Cox, Reece Witherspoon, Queen Rania of Jordan and Natasha Kaplinsky. The Seraphine range includes jeans and trousers, breastfeeding tops, evening and day wear, bikinis and other swimwear as well as lingerie and night wear.
Isabella Oliver is another designer who provides the pregnant woman with a fabulous range of fashionable designer clothes. Figure hugging wrap around tops are both trendy and practical, while giving the wearer the opportunity to proudly show off her shape. The silhouette is accentuated beautifully throughout the pregnancy and beyond. Tiffany Rose offers everything for that special occasion, including a fabulous range of maternity bridal gowns. Evening dresses are stunningly cut to offer a chic and elegant look as well as the much needed comfort.
Jennifer Lopez has apparently spent an entire pregnancy wearing Robert Cavalli designs. Gucci, Dries van Noten and Marc Jacobs all have a maternity range included in their collections. Lauren Kiyomi’s maternity wear range is popular with celebrities such as Tori Spelling and Diane Farr while Hot Mama Ink is worn by rocking mamas Christina Aguilera and Nicole Ritchie.
Key designers are pretty thin on the ground when it comes to designer maternity wear. There will always be a demand for this line in fashion and as a niche market it is not likely to disappear. For renowned and successful designers the demand has not yet been fully addressed by an adequate top of the range supply of exclusive maternity wear.
